Sebastián J. Borrero Villabol
Hello! My name is Sebastián Javier Borrero Villabol, I’m 23 years old, and I am originally from Carolina. I’m currently going into my sixth year as an Industrial Microbiology major at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, and during those few moments where I find myself not doing anything academically related, I enjoy cooking and baking, trying out new recipes, and spending time with my friends. Ever since a young age, I was very curious about the biological underpinnings of the natural world. I became especially interested in the manipulation of microorganisms to solve problems. It was because of this that I decided to study Industrial Microbiology at the UPR-Mayaguez. Throughout my college journey, while taking several genetics courses, I became more and more interested in the genetic manipulations of microorganisms as a means of production for humanity’s benefit. This sparked my interest in the biopharmaceutical industry. I wanted to be able to learn of different ways to do science to help people. In the near future, I see myself applying to graduate school and engaging in new ways of doing scientific research. More ahead, I would like to be able to apply my knowledge in the Research and Development branch of the Biopharmaceutical Industry, looking for new ways to improve the quality of life of millions around the world. As a stepping stone in my academic and professional journey, I have joined the Eli Lilly COOP program at Lilly del Caribe, one of the top insulin manufacturing companies in the entire world.
